A Mercury Transit Sequence

NASA APOD · Dominique Dierick
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mercury passed in front of the Sun on May 7, 2003, as seen from Earth. This sequence of images from Belgium shows the planet as a tiny black dot crossing the solar disk. Transits like this are rare because Mercury's orbit is tilted relative to Earth's orbit. The last one was in 2006, and another will occur this coming Monday.
