Zooming in on Star Cluster Terzan 5

Globular cluster Terzan 5 is a relic from the early days of the Milky Way, when thousands of such clusters roamed our galaxy. Now, fewer than 200 remain, many having been destroyed by encounters with each other or the galactic center. These clusters are older than any other structures in our galaxy, and their age helps us limit the age of the universe itself. Terzan 5 is a surviving example of these ancient stellar communities.
