Lightning is a rapid electrical discharge in the atmosphere, but exactly how it forms is still a mystery. Charges separate in clouds, leading to these powerful flashes. A lightning bolt can heat a thin column of air to three times the temperature of the Sun. This image captures a lightning storm over Colorado.
