An Airplane Glory

NASA APOD · Shane Larson (Adler Planetarium, CIERA-Northwestern)
COSMIC MESSAGE

When looking out an airplane window, you might see a 'glory,' a halo of light surrounding the plane's shadow. This phenomenon, also known as heiligenschein, occurs when sunlight reflects off water droplets in clouds back towards the observer. The glory appears directly opposite the Sun.
