Sputnik Planum is a large, smooth, golden expanse on Pluto, about 1,000 kilometers wide. Images from the New Horizons probe show it segmented into convection cells. One theory suggests that a great impact stirred up a subsurface ocean of saltwater, about 100 kilometers thick, which then shaped this region.
