Shell Game in the LMC

The Large Magellanic Cloud, our Milky Way's largest satellite galaxy, glows in the southern sky. This image uses narrow-band filters to show the light from ionized sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. These elements, energized by young, massive stars, form shell-shaped clouds of gas. The colors are assigned to specific elements: red for sulfur, green for hydrogen, and blue for oxygen.
