Stars form in energetic regions where gas and dark dust are pushed around in chaotic mayhem, such as W5, the Soul Nebula. Bright massive stars near the center are exploding, emitting ionizing light and energetic winds. This pushes away much surrounding gas and dust, leaving pillars of gas behind dense knots where new stars also form.
