Peculiar Galaxies of Arp 273

NASA APOD · Wolfgang Ries/Stefan Heutz
COSMIC MESSAGE

The image features two interacting galaxies, cataloged as Arp 273, located over 300 million light-years away. Their distorted shapes are due to the gravitational forces they exert on each other during close encounters. While they appear peculiar, such interacting galaxies are common throughout the universe. The spiky stars in the foreground are within our own Milky Way.
