Layer Cake Sunset
NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky
COSMIC MESSAGE
This sunset over the Pacific Ocean, seen from Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, shows the Sun appearing to be sliced into many layers. This effect happens when light passes through atmospheric layers with different temperatures and densities. The different densities bend the light at slightly different angles, creating the stacked appearance.
