When Mars met Neptune

NASA APOD · Stephen Mudge
COSMIC MESSAGE

On January 1, observers could use Mars to find the faint ice giant Neptune. The Red Planet's position guided skygazers to within 0.02 degrees of Neptune. These panels, taken from Brisbane, Australia, show the two planets shortly after their closest conjunction. A wide-field view also includes the slender crescent moon near the western horizon.
