Galaxy Cluster Gas Creates Hole in Microwave Background

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxy clusters contain very hot gas, which can interact with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This interaction, called the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, up-scatters CMB photons to higher energies. This creates 'holes' in CMB maps where the clusters are located. Astronomers use this effect to study galaxy clusters and the early universe.
