M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a stunning pair of interacting galaxies, the 51st entry in Charles Messier's catalog. The large galaxy, NGC 5194, has a well-defined spiral structure. Its spiral arms and dust lanes clearly sweep in front of its companion galaxy, NGC 5195.
