COSMIC MESSAGE

M81, a spiral galaxy similar in size to our Milky Way, is one of the brightest galaxies in our sky. It is located in the northern constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. This detailed image shows its bright yellow nucleus, blue spiral arms, and sweeping dust lanes. A remarkable dust lane, visible to the left of the galactic center, runs straight through the disk, hinting at a past interaction.
