NGC 289: Swirl in the Southern Sky

NASA APOD · Adam Block
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 289 is a spiral galaxy, larger than our Milky Way, about 70 million light-years distant. Seen nearly face-on, its bright core and colorful central disk lead to faint, bluish spiral arms. These arms sweep over 100,000 light-years from the galaxy's center. A small, fuzzy elliptical galaxy appears to interact with NGC 289 in this telescopic view.
