Rotation of the Large Magellanic Cloud

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image from the Gaia satellite shows that the Large Magellanic Cloud, our Milky Way's largest satellite galaxy, rotates. Gaia measures the positions of stars with high accuracy. Subsequent measurements reveal slight proper motions, which were previously undetectable. The image effectively shows exaggerated star trails for millions of stars, confirming the rotation.
