Spiral Galaxy NGC 4038 in Collision

NASA APOD · Domingo Pestana
COSMIC MESSAGE

Two galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, have been colliding for the past 100 million years. This image, known as the Antennae, captures the ongoing wreckage. Gravity is restructuring each galaxy, causing gas clouds to slam into each other. Bright blue knots of stars are forming as a result of these cosmic impacts.
