Martian dust storms can block out the Sun, causing issues for solar-powered spacecraft. Over three months ago, a planet-wide dust storm caused the Mars rover Opportunity to go into hibernation due to a lack of sunlight. The rover has not communicated since, but the dust is now clearing as the storm subsides. This image, taken on September 20th, shows the clearing atmosphere.
