NGC 4676: When Mice Collide

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These two galaxies, NGC 4676, are known as the "Mice" because of their long tidal tails. They are about 300 million light-years away and are in the process of pulling each other apart through gravitational interaction. Each spiral galaxy has likely already passed through the other, with the tails formed by the differential gravitational pulls over hundreds of millions of years.
