The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the closest major galaxy to our Milky Way. It is about 2.5 million light-years away. This image reveals the hundreds of billions of stars that compose it, while the distinct stars surrounding M31 are actually foreground stars within our own galaxy. Andromeda and the Milky Way dominate our Local Group of galaxies.
