As 2019 began, the New Horizons spacecraft flew by Ultima Thule, a Kuiper Belt object 6.5 billion kilometers from the Sun. Its nickname, 2014 MU69, means 'beyond the known world.' Following its 2015 flyby of Pluto, New Horizons was directed to attempt this most distant flyby, approaching Ultima Thule within about 3,500 kilometers.
