Twin Galaxies in Virgo
NASA APOD · CHART32 Team
COSMIC MESSAGE
Two spiral galaxies, NGC 4567 and NGC 4568, appear close together, sometimes called the Butterfly Galaxies. They are part of the large Virgo Galaxy Cluster, along with the elliptical galaxy NGC 4564. Despite their proximity, their spiral arms and dust lanes show little distortion from gravitational tides. Their giant molecular clouds are colliding, likely fueling the birth of massive stars.
