Stardust and Starlight in M78
NASA APOD · Richard S. Wright Jr.
COSMIC MESSAGE
M78 is a bright reflection nebula in Orion, about 1,500 light-years from us and spanning about 5 light-years across. Its bluish tint comes from dust reflecting the blue light of hot, young stars. Dark dust lanes are visible throughout this region, showing where denser material blocks starlight. It is a prime example of dust and starlight interaction in a fertile star-forming area.
