Gigantic Jet Lightning over India

While flying over Bhadrak, India, an industrious passenger captured an image of gigantic jet lightning. This rare phenomenon appears to extend upwards from a thundercloud towards Earth's ionosphere. Although it looks connected to the airplane's wing in this 3.2-second exposure, the jet likely originated from a more distant storm. The exact nature of gigantic jet lightning is still being studied.
