Pluto at Night

COSMIC MESSAGE
Pluto's night side, lit by the faintest glow of the distant Sun, reveals a surprisingly complex atmosphere. The New Horizons spacecraft captured this view in July 2015, about 19 minutes after its closest approach. At a distance of 21,000 kilometers, New Horizons looked back at Pluto's crescent, framed by the Kuiper Belt's shadowy expanse. The image shows layers of hazy atmosphere, illuminated from behind by the distant Sun.
