M27: The Dumbbell Nebula

NASA APOD · Steve Mazlin
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Dumbbell Nebula, M27, is a planetary nebula, a glowing shell of gas cast off by a dying star. It is the kind of nebula our own Sun will make in about five billion years. Charles Messier cataloged it in 1764 as the 27th object on his list of things that were definitely not comets. M27 is one of the brightest planetary nebulae in our sky, about 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula.
