Mammatus Clouds over Nebraska
NASA APOD · Jorn Olsen Photography
COSMIC MESSAGE
Mammatus clouds are unusual, with bottoms that look like bubbles instead of flat. Normally, rising moist air condenses at a specific height, creating a flat cloud base. These bubble-like pockets form when large water droplets or ice crystals fall into clear air and evaporate. They often appear in turbulent air near thunderstorms.
