COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 247, a spiral galaxy smaller than our Milky Way, is about 70,000 light-years across. Only 11 million light-years distant, it is nearby and dominates this telescopic field of view toward the southern constellation Cetus. Tilted nearly edge-on, it has a pronounced void on one side of its disk. Many background galaxies are also visible in this sharp portrait.
