Iridescent Clouds over Sweden

NASA APOD · Goran Strand
COSMIC MESSAGE

These multi-colored clouds over Sweden are polar stratospheric clouds, also known as nacreous or mother-of-pearl clouds. They form from small, uniformly sized water droplets in the stratosphere. When the Sun is at the right angle, its light diffracts through these clouds, creating their vivid iridescent colors. This is a relatively rare atmospheric phenomenon.
