COSMIC MESSAGE
Earth reached perihelion for 2020 on January 5th, its closest point to the Sun in its elliptical orbit. This distance does not determine the seasons, which are governed by Earth's axial tilt. However, it meant the Sun appeared at its largest apparent size on that day. This composite image compares two pictures of the Sun, both taken from Earth with the same telescope, showing the difference between perihelion and aphelion.
