On January 21, 2019, the Moon crossed into Earth's shadow during a total lunar eclipse. This composite image, made from 35 frames taken three minutes apart, shows the Moon's progression. Sunlight scattered by Earth's atmosphere into the shadow causes the Moon to appear reddish during totality.
