This simulation, called Illustris, shows how galaxies formed over 13 billion years. It tracks matter into a wide variety of galaxy types, giving insight into how the universe evolved. The project used 20 million CPU hours to follow 12 billion resolution elements across a cube 35 million light years wide. It helps us understand our place in the cosmos.
