Churning Clouds on Jupiter

Jupiter's clouds churn with unexpected electrical discharges, a phenomenon called shallow lightning. Data from the Juno spacecraft shows that ammonia and water stick to mushballs, which are lifted by updrafts of gas. This process creates the charge separations needed for lightning, even where ammonia was thought to be absent in the upper atmosphere.
