Central NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide
NGC 1316 is a large elliptical galaxy with dark dust lanes, usually found in spiral galaxies. Hubble Space Telescope images show details that suggest it formed from galactic collisions. Deep and wide views reveal huge collisional shells, indicating a history of mergers that created its unusual structure.
