Sun Pillar with Upper Tangent Arc

NASA APOD · Mike Cohea
COSMIC MESSAGE

This unusual sun pillar, seen in Providence, Rhode Island, fanned out at the top into an upper tangent arc. Sun pillars are columns of light caused by sunlight reflecting off wobbling, hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere. Upper tangent arcs form when sunlight refracts through similar crystals, but with a different orientation.
