COSMIC MESSAGE
These red filaments over the Andes are red sprites, a rare form of lightning confirmed only about 30 years ago. After a powerful lightning strike, these sprites may start as 100-meter balls of ionized air that shoot down from 80 kilometers high at ten percent the speed of light. They are quickly followed by a group of upward streaking ionized balls. This image was taken from the Las Campanas Observatory.
