Mercury-Redstone 3 Launch

Sixty years ago, on May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard launched into space aboard a Redstone rocket. His Mercury-Redstone 3 spacecraft, Freedom 7, made the first space flight by an American. The launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, was broadcast live to a global audience. This historic flight followed less than a month after the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin.
