M104: The Sombrero Galaxy

NASA APOD · Bray Falls
COSMIC MESSAGE

M104, the Sombrero Galaxy, is famous for its nearly edge-on profile and a broad ring of obscuring dust. This dust is seen in silhouette against the galaxy's extensive central bulge of stars. This gives the galaxy a hat-like appearance, hence its popular name. This sharp optical view was processed to preserve details often lost in the glare of M104's bright center.
