The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, also known as vdB 142, winds through the emission nebula and young star cluster complex IC 1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The cosmic elephant's trunk, seen on the left, is over 20 light-years long. This detailed telescopic close-up, with visible stars digitally removed, highlights the bright, swept-back ridges that outline pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. These dense regions are where new stars are forming.
