Sometimes ice crystals in the atmosphere create halos around the Moon. This image from Madrid, Spain, in 2012 shows the Moon with four lunar halos. The brightest object is the Moon, near the top. Light from the Moon refracts through tumbling hexagonal ice crystals, creating a 22-degree halo around it.
