Rocket Transits Rippling Moon
NASA APOD · Steven Madow
COSMIC MESSAGE
A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, its exhaust plume glowing against the distant, nearly full Moon. While the rocket itself doesn't make the Moon ripple, the heated air and gases in the plume cause the Moon's image to appear wavy. This optical effect is due to changes in how light passes through the disturbed atmosphere.
