In 2004, a "flying saucer" crash-landed in the Utah desert. This was NASA's Genesis sample return capsule, part of a mission to study the Sun. Its parachutes failed, causing an unexpected hard landing at over 300 kilometers per hour. The mission had been orbiting the Sun since 2001.
