COSMIC MESSAGE
These two prominent clouds in the Chilean Atacama Desert are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. They are satellite galaxies of our Milky Way, named for the 16th-century explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The Large Magellanic Cloud is about 160,000 light-years away, and the Small Magellanic Cloud is about 210,000 light-years distant. They are the brightest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and are easily visible in the southern hemisphere skies.
