Mammatus Clouds over Nebraska

NASA APOD · Jorn Olsen Photography
COSMIC MESSAGE

These bubble-like cloud bottoms are called mammatus clouds. Normally, cloud bottoms are flat because moist, warm air condenses into water droplets at a specific height. But under certain conditions, pockets of large water or ice droplets can fall into clear air, evaporating as they descend. This often happens in turbulent air near thunderstorms, as seen over Nebraska.
