A Year of Sunspots

This image shows a year of sunspots, month by month, and all together in a central view. Each sunspot is magnetically cooled, making it appear dark, and can last from days to months. Although these images are from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, sunspots can be seen with a small telescope equipped with a solar filter.
