That red ring in the sky is a type of lightning called ELVES. While most lightning flashes between clouds, ELVES are upper-atmospheric lightning, like red sprites and blue jets. They are created when an electromagnetic pulse from charged clouds shoots upward, impacting the ionosphere. This image, taken over Italy, shows a particularly clear example.
