The Moon's quarter phases are when it is half illuminated, either growing towards full or shrinking towards new. The dividing line between light and shadow, called the terminator, runs right down the middle. This image shows both the first and third quarter moons, side by side. Each quarter phase means the Moon has completed a quarter of its orbit around Earth.
