The Crab Nebula, or M1, is the first object on Charles Messier's list of things that are not comets. It is a supernova remnant, the expanding cloud of debris from a star's death. Chinese astronomers watched the star explode in 1054. The nebula is still expanding at 1,500 kilometers per second, about 10 light-years across.
