Northern lights shine in this view from Earth's stratosphere, captured over Winnipeg, Canada. Energetic particles from the Sun excite atomic oxygen in Earth's atmosphere, creating the shimmering aurora. The 5-second exposure from a speeding aircraft also shows colorful trails of terrestrial lights below.
