“The Pencil Nebula Supernova Shock Wave” is copyrighted by Helge Buesing. NASA has permission to show it and we don't, so it isn't on this card.
See it on NASA's siteThe Pencil Nebula, also known as NGC 2736, is a supernova shock wave moving at over 500,000 kilometers per hour. Its thin, bright, braided filaments are ripples in a cosmic sheet of glowing gas, seen almost edge-on. Discovered in the 1840s by Sir John Herschel, this nebula is part of the much larger Vela supernova remnant. It is about 800 light-years away in the constellation Vela.
