NASA APOD · Helge Buesing
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Pencil Nebula, also known as NGC 2736, is a supernova shock wave moving at over 500,000 kilometers per hour. Its thin, bright, braided filaments are ripples in a cosmic sheet of glowing gas, seen almost edge-on. Discovered in the 1840s by Sir John Herschel, this nebula is part of the much larger Vela supernova remnant. It is about 800 light-years away in the constellation Vela.
